“Summer Love”: How to Get Glowing Skin this Summer

Summer is the perfect time to go for that “bare-but better” face. With your solid tan fully under way helping you achieve that glow from within, it really is all about the “no-makeup” makeup look for this season. To achieve this look, keep in mind that no matter what products or brands you choose to work with, you want to have healthy, glowing skin. Having a solid framework will make everything else you use on your face pop that much easier. An added bonus, when you have a healthy base, you end up needing to use less product to get that stunning look that you yearn for. Knowing how to prepare skin before makeup is one of the best things you can do for your beauty routine. Here are a few tips and tricks to enhance your natural beauty with effortless makeup and to get that perfectly glowing skin. Follow these steps to get that much sought after “Summer Love” look.

Step One: Moisturize.

Be sure to use a good moisturizer on your face before you get started with any makeup application routine. Moisturizing helps to balance out the natural oils on your face as well as even out the texture, giving you a supple and smooth canvas to work with. Don’t forget to apply moisturizer to your neck as the skin in this area tends to be thinner than on your face. Layer on sunscreen with your daily moisturizer to block harmful rays and protect your skin. Tip: Allow enough time for your moisturizer to work into your skin. This is key in order to avoid having your face makeup slip around or having an uneven application of your foundation.

Recommendation: Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer with SPF15

Step Two: Prime.

Primers are great to ensure longevity of your makeup. It also helps with smooth application of foundation, filling in any fine lines, large pores or trouble spots that you may have in your complexion. Choose a face primer that caters to your needs and areas of concern. Tip: Primers are either water based or silicone based. Be sure to refer to the ingredients of your foundation and select your primer accordingly. If you use foundation that is water based, choose a primer that is water based as well for more seamless results.

Recommendation: Smashbox Photo Finish Primer SPF15

Step Three: Cover.

When working with a heavy, full coverage foundation, you can really take away from the star of the show here- your skin! I recommend sticking to products that are breathable, yet still give you the coverage that you need. Use a tinted moisturizer if you feel comfortable to do so. If you prefer to have the coverage of a foundation, be sure to choose a lightweight product that works well for your face. You can always spot cover in areas that you feel need it using concealer. Tip: Remember, using lighter concealer will act as a highlighter making the area stand out. Be sure to use a concealer that is the same shade as your skin for this step.

Recommendation: MAC Face and Body Foundation or Clinique Almost Powder Makeup SPF 15

Step Four: Glow.

The summer time is all about having that sun kissed colour to your skin. Apply highlighter to the high points of your cheeks, inner corners of your eyes, cupids bow, and anywhere else that you want the light to reflect and bring forward. Bronzer can be used to contour your face, creating shadows and depth. Use a light hand if contouring as the goal is to achieve an effortless look. Apply bronzer to the places where the sun would naturally hit such as the forehead, across the nose, and cheeks. Tip: Mix in illuminating cream products to your foundation in areas that you want to get an extra highlight and glow.

Recommendation: Apply MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream under your highlighter and/or NARS Laguna Illuminator under your contour/bronzer for that added glow

Step Five: Colour.

Blush is used to add a natural flush to the cheeks and to give a perfectly sun kissed look. Pick a colour that works well with your skin tone. Summer is all about the corals, pinks and rose tones to give a lift and add a fresh

youthfulness to the face. Tip: Pick a cream sheen product that can double up as a lip stain. Go for a pink or coral lipstick for an evening look. Don’t forget to protect your lips from the sun and keep yourself hydrated.

Recommendation: Stila Convertible Color for cheeks and lips

Step Six: Eyes.

Keep your eye look simple using a light coat of mascara after you curl your lashes. This helps to open up your eyes, helping you look rested and youthful. Add long lasting eyeliner for the evening.

Optional: Sweep a golden/bronze eyeshadow over the lids for a subtle pop of colour. Keep the eyes neutral to ensure that the focus remains on the glow of your skin. Tip: Apply a set of romantic lashes to add some drama for a flirty night look.

Recommendation: Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette for soft rose toned shadows

Step Seven: Set.

Give a light dust of translucent power to ensure your makeup stays put. The nose, forehead, under eye area, and chin are all areas that tend to get oily and need to be set in place. Finally, spritz your face with setting spray to seal in the look and ensure longevity. Tip: Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Keep yourself hydrated and protected to ensure that your skin stays healthy and flawless! Choose a setting spray with an SPF already in it. You can keep this with you for an easy way to touch up and refresh your look.

Recommendation: Coola Makeup Setting Spray SPF 30
