February is quite the romantic type of month as it holds the famous Valentine's Day on the 14th. It's nice to know the history of holidays, because it gives us more of a reason to celebrate them.
Emperor Claudius II voiced that it was important for soldiers to be single men rather than married family men, therefore he forbid marriage of all younger men. This saddened Saint Valentine as he knew it was an injustice to these younger men and so, he secretly performed marriages for these young lovers. When the emperor found out about Saint Valentine’s “betrayal,” he ordered for Saint Valentine to be executed. Although while imprisoned, Saint Valentine actually fell in love with a young girl (his jailor’s daughter) who visited him during his time in prison. Before his death, he wrote a valentine’s letter to the young girl signing it “From Your Valentine.” He was shortly executed after that. Saint Valentine proved to be a heroic and romantic person.
Although tragic, Saint Valentine left us with a wonderful message about spreading love around us. As LOVE seemed to be his biggest message for Valentine’s Day, we should also keep Saint Valentine’s sacrifice of love in our minds as we celebrate love not only on February 14th, but every day.
